The Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit project is one of the largest transportation investments planned for the Route 1 corridor. The project is intended to provide faster, more reliable, and more visible transit service along Richmond Highway while supporting redevelopment, pedestrian access, station-area improvements, and long-term corridor mobility.
Richmond Highway / Route 1 corridor, generally serving communities between Huntington, Alexandria, Hybla Valley, Fort Belvoir, and surrounding Mount Vernon District neighborhoods.
Richmond Highway is a major travel corridor with significant transit demand, redevelopment activity, pedestrian safety needs, and congestion. Bus Rapid Transit is intended to improve mobility, support more reliable transit service, and help connect residents to jobs, schools, services, Metro, and regional destinations.
The project includes planned BRT stations, transit-priority features, roadway and streetscape improvements, pedestrian and bicycle access enhancements, and coordination with redevelopment along the Richmond Highway corridor.
The project is also closely connected to broader land-use planning, pedestrian safety, affordable housing, economic development, and transit-oriented redevelopment efforts.
