Fairfax County implemented automated speed cameras in the Laurel Hill Elementary School zone along Silverbrook Road in response to persistent concerns about excessive speeding, school-zone safety, and driver behavior along a wide, high-volume arterial roadway.

Silverbrook Road carries commuter traffic, school traffic, regional trips, and local neighborhood traffic. Its roadway geometry can encourage higher speeds, creating safety concerns near school entrances, crossings, buses, parents, staff, and students.
The automated speed camera program operates during designated school-zone enforcement periods. Cameras support consistent enforcement of posted school-zone speed limits and are intended to reduce speeding, improve driver awareness, and support safer conditions during arrival and dismissal periods.
