Transportation Contributor Guide

A guide for future contributors, TAC participants, civic volunteers, and project stewards who help maintain and expand the TranspoFairfax knowledge base.

Why Contributors Matter

Transportation knowledge is distributed across residents, civic associations, agencies, public officials, project teams, meeting participants, and community observers. TranspoFairfax depends on preserving and organizing that knowledge over time.

Types of Contributions

  • Project updates
  • Meeting summaries
  • Funding updates
  • Agency announcements
  • Historical background
  • Broken link reports
  • Document or map references
  • Community observations
  • Corrections to existing pages

Adding a New Project

A new project entry should include as many of the following fields as possible:

  • Project name
  • Location
  • Project type
  • Lead agency
  • Current status
  • Plain-language summary
  • Related communities
  • Related corridors
  • Funding source if known
  • Reference documents or links

Updating an Existing Project

  1. Verify the update from a source when possible.
  2. Update the project summary or status clearly.
  3. Add or revise related links.
  4. Record important changes in the project change log.
  5. Preserve older context when it remains useful.

Submitting Documents or Meeting Materials

Documents should be connected to the project, corridor, community, agency, meeting, or issue they support.

  • Reports
  • Meeting presentations
  • Maps
  • Funding documents
  • Construction notices
  • Committee notes
  • Public hearing materials

Preserving Institutional Memory

Older information is often valuable even when a project changes. Contributors should help preserve:

  • Previous alternatives
  • Earlier project descriptions
  • Funding history
  • Meeting discussions
  • Community concerns
  • Major design changes
  • Important decisions and milestones
