A long-term vision for expanding the TranspoFairfax model into a reusable civic transportation knowledge platform for communities across the country.
TranspoFairfax began as a local transportation knowledge base for South Fairfax, but the model could eventually support many communities, counties, cities, regions, and states.
The larger vision is a national transportation knowledge network where residents can ask plain-language questions about transportation projects and receive clear, current, accessible answers.
Transportation information is often scattered across agency websites, PDFs, meeting slides, funding documents, maps, and public records. Residents may not know where to look or how different projects connect.
A national knowledge network could make local transportation information easier to find, understand, preserve, and compare.
A resident could visit a local transportation knowledge site and ask:
“What is happening with the Route 1 BRT project?”
The system could respond with the latest status, responsible agencies, funding stage, related documents, upcoming meetings, community impacts, and a spoken summary.
The Transportation Advisory Collaboration Initiative is the foundation for this larger vision. TAC provides the structure: projects, people, funding, agencies, documents, meetings, timelines, issues, and updates.
The national network would apply that same structure across many places.
TranspoFairfax can serve as the first working demonstration of this idea: a local, community-centered transportation knowledge system that begins as a static website and grows toward a structured, searchable, intelligent platform.
