Transportation AI Roadmap

A long-term roadmap for using artificial intelligence to help residents understand transportation projects, status updates, documents, meetings, and community impacts.

The Vision

The future Transportation AI system would allow residents to ask plain-language questions and receive clear answers grounded in TranspoFairfax project records, documents, meeting archives, change logs, maps, and structured data.

Phase 1 — Build the Knowledge Base

  • Project pages
  • Community pages
  • Corridor pages
  • Category pages
  • Resource guides
  • Archive and timeline pages

Phase 2 — Standardize the Data

  • Use consistent project templates
  • Define project fields
  • Define document and meeting fields
  • Track project status and updates
  • Build a data dictionary

Phase 3 — Add Search

  • Search by project
  • Search by community
  • Search by corridor
  • Search by agency
  • Search by status
  • Search documents and meeting records

Phase 4 — AI-Assisted Answers

Once project records are structured, an AI assistant could answer questions such as:

  • What is the current status of Richmond Highway BRT?
  • Which projects affect Fort Belvoir?
  • What changed recently on the CSX Third Track project?
  • Who is the lead agency for this project?
  • What documents explain this project?

Phase 5 — Voice Responses

A future version could allow residents to ask questions by voice and hear spoken answers, making transportation information more accessible while still providing links to source pages.

Phase 6 — Multi-Jurisdiction Expansion

The same AI roadmap could eventually support transportation knowledge bases in other jurisdictions, allowing residents across the country to ask questions about local projects.

AI Must Be Grounded in Sources

The assistant should answer from structured records, project pages, official documents, meeting summaries, and archived updates. The goal is not speculation, but clear, source-grounded transportation information.
